2025 is almost over, so, it’s time to look back!
New role
At pretty much the start of 2025 (very late 2024) I started a new role at Fusions PIM, after wanting to focus on code quality and understanding, rather than having to code against a timer and trying to push things out as fast as possible. While at first I was unsure if it was the right move looking back now I’ve learnt a lot. Perhaps not in the literal sense, but more focusing on quality, and thinking… making sure the PR’s I make, and the reviews I leave offer value.
Whilst getting stuck in very quickly, I’ve worked on a lot of large features, and major infrastructure changes. I have a great team surrounding me, which I think is part of the reason I’m able to do what I do.
When the team all come together it makes for a better environment. There’s nothing worse than having everything land in your lap or having to pick up the slack (I’ve been there). But, happy to report that isn’t the case.
Expecting big changes
As if starting a new role wasn’t daunting enough, I also found out I was going to be a dad. That news changed a lot for me mentally, especially at 28.
Sadly, our daughter Gracie didn’t make it. Without going into too much detail, I still believe that even in the hardest moments, it’s important to try and find some positives.
Talking about it really helps. Even though she’s not here, being open about it has made me stronger in ways I didn’t expect. Things happen to us all in life, but try to take the smallest things as positives.
Open Source
I made a promise to myself that I’d try to do more open source since starting the role, since Wes (boss man) is all for it - and it often helps with work too.
I’ve been a developer for a pretty long time (7-8 years 😱) - but only really did little bits here and there. I feel like this year I’ve really made some meaningful contributions - such as Laravel, Pest etc. I think it really does help getting involved, and I live by the words “The worst they can say is no” it’s hard to get knocked down or told no, the main reason why it’s useful is it makes you think and look at the bigger picture, ie the “Developer Experience” if you have a pain point the likelihood is someone else is too.
So, I guess if you’re reading this I urge you to get involved, make a PR. Even to some of my repos! It’ll help you.
